Do Vitamin Supplements Actually Work?

Deciding on what to eat for dinner can be a great source of frustration. After dealing with stress throughout the day, the last thing we want is to have to think about is what we want to eat. Many times, we prefer ordering out to save us time and energy of cooking, or we choose to pop a TV dinner into the microwave because it can be finished in five minutes. But how does eating these convenient foods affect our health?

Liquid Vitamin

The answer is simple. Convenient foods are highly processed and in many instances are devoid of essential nutrients. This means that we are not absorbing enough vitamins and minerals and you run the risk of developing serious complications. In order to compensate, most of us take vitamins supplements to bridge the gap. It is as simple as popping a pill and allowing the body to do the rest.

Vitamin supplements come in various forms. The most common variety of supplements are multivitamin tablets that are supposed to help you meet your recommended dietary requirements. By taking these multivitamins, we believe we are doing the right thing. However, it seems that this is not the case. During the past two years, various studies on vitamin supplements raised doubts as to whether the supplements do any good.

Some studies have shown that they can also post some real medical risks. Research conducted on various patient populations and medical conditions, could not successfully find evidence that multivitamins prevent the onset of chronic disease in healthy people. They also found in this study on 160,000 postmenopausal women that multivitamins did not prevent cancer, heart attacks or strokes.

In 2006, the National Institute of health convened an independent panel of experts to evaluate claims that vitamins could prevent chronic disease. Once investigations were completed, the panel issued a report, which stated that they could find no strong evidence of beneficial health-related effects of supplements taken singly, in pairs, or combinations.

Antioxidants did not fare much better. In 2007, after research was carried out on more than 252,000 people, the reports published in the Journal of the American medical Association found that not only did antioxidant supplements fail to offer protection against heart disease, stroke and cancer, they may actually increase the risk of death. Further studies highlighted a link between antioxidant medication and an increased risk of various cancers. The study found that ingesting certain antioxidant pills can actually feed latent cancers and reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy.

The supplement industry is a billion industry that has not been very forthcoming with the results of the studies. There are no leaflets to be found in vitamin or antioxidant tablets, which details potential side-effects and consequences of taking them. Perhaps they should be regulated to the same extent as pharmaceutical medications, which have to spell out in detail all side-effects that may be experienced by taking the medication. Only then will the general public become more educated on the benefits as well as the dangers of taking vitamins and antioxidant supplements.
